former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has commended state governors, who recently slashed their own salaries in a bid to reduce the cost of governance and cope with the reduction in federal allocations.
Atiku, on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, expressed delight that the Adamawa State Governor, Bindo Jibrilla, had announced a 50 per cent pay cut.
The former Vice-President, who is also from Adamawa State, said the development would reduce the cost of governance.
Atiku said, “I am glad more leaders aware of the embracing this need to reduce the cost of governance. I’m happy Adamawa is leading.”
It will be recalled that Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, on May 29, said he would forfeit 50 per cent of his salary until the financial situation of the state improves.
Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi State, also took a cue from his Kaduna State counterpart as he announced a 50 per cent cut in his salary and that of his deputy, Nuhu Gidado.
Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, while inaugurating the state House of Assembly on June 9, announced the reduction of the number of ministries in the state from 23 to 13.
The Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganguje, on June 1, said plans were underway to reduce the number of ministries and departments following the dwindling federal allocations.
